Crew Earth Observations—International
Polar Year (CEO-IPY) supported an international
collaboration of scientists studying
Earth’s polar regions from 2007 to 2009. ISS
crewmembers photographed polar phenomena
including icebergs, auroras, and mesospheric
clouds. Observations, through digital still
photography and video, from the ISS are used
in conjunction with data gathered from satellites
and ground observations to understand
the current status of the polar regions. The
ISS, as a platform for these observations, will
contribute data that have not been available in
the past and will set the precedent for future
international scientific collaborations for Earth
observations. The International Polar Year,
which started in 2007 and extended through
February 2009, is a global campaign to study
Earth’s polar regions and their role in global
climate change.

Lab-on-a-Chip Application
Development—Portable Test System
(LOCAD-PTS) is a handheld device for
rapid detection of biological and chemical
substances on surfaces aboard the ISS.
Astronauts swab surfaces within the cabin,
mix swabbed material in liquid form to the
LOCAD-PTS, and obtain results within
15 minutes on a display screen, effectively
providing an early warning system to
enable the crew to take remedial measures if
necessary to protect themselves on board the
ISS. The handheld device is used with three
different types of cartridges for the detection
of endotoxin (a marker of gram-negative
bacteria), glucan (fungi), and lipoteichoic
acid (gram-positive bacteria). Lab-on-a-
Chip technology has an ever-expanding
range of applications in the biotech industry.
Chips are available (or in development)
that can also detect yeast, mold, and grampositive
bacteria; identify environmental
contaminants; and perform quick health
diagnostics in medical clinics.

The Plasma Crystal experiment was one of the first scientific experiments performed on the ISS in 2001. Complex plasma is a low-temperature gaseous mixture composed of ionized gas, neutral gas, and micron-sized particles. Under specific conditions, the interactions of these microparticles lead to a self-organized structure of a “plasma crystal” state of matter. Gravity causes the microparticles to sediment due to their relatively high mass compared to that of the ions, and so they have to be electrostatically levitated for proper development. The microgravity environment of the ISS allowed the development of larger three-dimensional plasma crystal systems in much weaker electric fields than those necessary for the levitation on the ground, revealing unique structural details of the crystals. The European Space Agency (ESA) is now building the next generation of complex plasma experiments for the ISS in collaboration with a large international science team. Understanding the formation and structure of these plasma crystal systems can also lead to improvements in industrial process development on Earth.

Treatment Options for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy: Collaborative High Quality Protein Crystal Growth—This JAXA- and Roscosmos-sponsored investigation was a unique collaboration between several ISS International Partners. The HQL-79 (human hematopoietic prostaglandin D2 synthase inhibitor) protein is a candidate treatment in inhibiting the effects of Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Investigators used the microgravity environment of the ISS to grow larger crystals and more accurately determine the three-dimensional structures of HQL-79 protein crystals. The findings led to the development of a more potent form of the protein, which is important for the development of a novel treatment for Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Russian investigators have collaborated internationally to grow macromolecular crystals on ISS since 2001, including genetically engineered human insulin (deposited into protein data bank in 2008), tuberculosis, and cholera-derived pyrophosphatase. The next generation of Russian-Japanese collaboration is the JAXA-High Quality Protein Crystal Growth experiment installed in Kibo in August 2009.

Advanced Diagnostic Ultrasound in Microgravity (ADUM)—The ultrasound is the only medical imaging device currently available on the ISS. This experiment demonstrated the diagnostic accuracy of ultrasound in medical contingencies in space and determined the ability of minimally trained crewmembers to perform ultrasound examinations with remote guidance from the ground. The telemedicine strategies investigated by this experiment could have widespread application and have been applied on Earth in emergency and rural care situations. In fact, the benefits of this research are being used in professional and amateur sports from hockey, baseball, and football teams to the U.S. Olympic Committee. Sport physicians and trainers can now perform similar scans on injured players at each of their respective sport complexes by taking advantage of ultrasound experts available remotely at the Henry Ford Medical System in Detroit. This is an excellent example of how research aboard the ISS continues to be put to good use here on Earth while, at the same time, paving the way for our future explorers.

An ISS investigator recently patented the Microparticle Analysis System and Method, an invention for a device that detects and analyzes microparticles. This technology supports the chemical and pharmaceutical industries and is one of a sequence of inventions related to technology development for experiments on the ISS and Shuttle, including the Microencapsulation Electrostatic Processing System (MEPS) experiment that demonstrated microencapsulation processing of drugs, a new and powerful method for delivering drugs to targeted locations. MEPS technologies and methods have since been developed that will be used to deliver microcapsules of anti-tumor drugs directly to tumor sites as a form of cancer therapy

The laboratories of the ISS are virtually complete; key research facilities—science laboratories in space—are up and running. In 2008, the ESA Columbus and JAXA Kibo laboratories joined the U.S. Destiny Laboratory and the Russian Zvezda Service Module. Zvezda was intended primarily to support crew habitation but became the first multipurpose research laboratory of the ISS. In addition, the U.S. has expanded its user base beyond NASA to other government agencies and the private sectors to make the ISS a U.S. National Laboratory.
As all ISS partner nations begin their research programs, international collaboration and interchange among scientists worldwide is growing rapidly. Over the final years of assembly in 2009–2010, the initial experiments have been completed in the newest racks, the crew size on board ISS has doubled to six astronauts/cosmonauts, and in 2010 we will transition from “early utilization” to “full utilization” of ISS. The ISS labs are GO!

This high-flying international laboratory is packed with some of the most technologically sophisticated facilities that can support a wide range of scientific inquiry in biology, human physiology, physical and materials sciences, and Earth and space science. There is probably no single place on Earth where you can find such a laboratory—approximately the size of an American football field (including the end zones) and having the interior volume of 1.5 Boeing 747 jetliners—with facilities to conduct the breadth of research that can be done aboard the ISS. This is a great film. I actually spoke to its creator today about adding the solar refugee POD idea which he saw on another website I subscribe to. I like the "Imagine Cup" like feel to it as a finalist. I only have one objection to its underlying topic of creating jobs and housing homeless. I think at this point in history the gas engine is to much engrained in the fabric of most countries. By creating jobs we could also loose more in industrys such as,fuel retailing and the service staion industry. Aeronautical engineering focuses on making planes more aerodynamic. Also when designing new generation engines, engineers are working to increase the speed of the core components (the compressor and turbines) while minimizing the speed of the fan. This would go a long way toward improving the operation of the engine and helping aircraft consume less fuel. The price of fuel directly effects ticket price. Just the same the automotive industry is based on fuel burning engines so are (generators/tractors/home and lawn) engines. Refining employs millions of people. Greece shows just how interdependent the global economy has become. So a fluctuation that created volatility in Oil could very well send other markets into downturns. The compromise to me comes in creating Hybrid/electric engines. Still creating less dependent consumers. To me we will need to keep science and economics in a perfect balance to achieve some of our objectives like space exploration for example. A sudden collapse of exxon or BP at this point i dont think will be compensated by green jobs. I think a gradual change should take place to let these same industries make investments in their market share of industries which would be created by hybrid electric. Eventually electric.They have the wheels and capitol in place. Let them invest in the Photovoltaic panels, hydroelectric dams,Geothermal power,Ocean thermal energy conversion, and solar power towers. If ford suddenly began using all electric engines what form of energy is going to compensate this higher drain in electricity. Coal? Not as "eco" friendly as of today. Natural Gas? Do we want to do the work to get it? What should change rapidly is the structure of the tax system for specific industrys like wind. To me a company that produces Wind energy should get greater tax breaks that let them compete. Should get benefits like discounts on materials for creating these devices. A industry like private space should also be subsidized if its not done so already. Regardlessless of opinion movies like this inspire people to exchange ideas

To explain closing the Gap. That was the first name I used for my non-profit project http:1Thought4Youth.webs.com. You will see the ideas all which involve closing the gap in education, unemployment. The name one thought for youth was actually suggested by a moderator of the site. With Solar Refugee Housing for obvious reasons you close the gap in homlessness but also another facet of this would involve ending Malaria. Breakthroughs in molecular technology have created
a mosquito repellant that blocks the carbon dioxide signal that mosquitos detect from are breathing. I am currently speaking with people about ways to create a polymer which is built with this repellent. So in a sense you are not just closing the gap in unemployment you are closing the gap in Malaria deaths. What date are you planning to release the film? Love your input on some of the other ideas like Corporate Adopt A Highschool. Thanks again sir. I will be able to message in more detail later today.

inspire other countries to duplicate this initiative. Strong businesses
have shareholders with money left to fight poverty. Put into job
creation. People who are inspired by science or engineering will not only
create the next cure or Vasimir engine design but they wont waste money.
They think of all of the scientific scenarios of a planet where resources
are not funneled into positve ends. Imagine the world's ten richest countries
devoting at least 2% of their federal budget towards space?

My concept game would even create a simulated Sonic Speed rail
that shows how much more effective industries around the
globe could become by the usage of this innovative idea.
Show how much more a business spends using normal delivery
as opposed to Sonic. How much more effective aerospace industries
that rely on segments to be delivered could complete their projects
with a high speed sonic rail system. A rail that operates a (jet-fuselage without
wings). A rail that could also be a emegency response in disaster areas when air
travel is not possible. Even make delivery of medicine and other health
related services capable of being tracked with greater efficency. A assembly

I am working on a application called VirtualBuildASchool which would create a game that took donations to build schools even possibly factories. Got a chance to see Dr. Ben Bernake on the Senate Banking Committee this week. I think this kind of hearing should be mandatory veiwing for kids. They need to understand how delicate the economy is. I particularly liked his veiws on the depression. How when countries permit deflation it can be destructive. How weak should the dollar get? How strong? He talked about stabalizing inflation to (CPI) 2% . Using large purchases of treasury bills. This would push down yeilds and inspire investment and consumption. QE2 Quantitive easing. Should interest rates go up now (monetary policy) vs using (fiscal policy) higher taxes. The effects on unemployment. I think the debt estimate was 1.7 trillion. The factors which caused the Great Depression (wikipedia) are all here. A few that stick out to me are lack of new high growth industries and high consumer DEBT. The rise of the .COMs and Silicon Valley/ Seattle companies brought a era of prosperity. Did education play a part to bring that sonic - boom. Wasnt it the reason the companies were born. What was it about World War II that the country did that ended that recession. Created jobs. A massive public works project. What about a project now that does not involve producing tanks but uses the construction industry just the same. During the war the GDP rose, is the point I'm making. Besides the fact it was not producing comsumer goods and creating debt. Think of a project like this with long term economic benfits. I want to get kids to think of a collapsing economy like a hidden enemy. We have to do something or be lost. When are economy collapses you can guarantee the repurcusions will be heard around the World. From a political standpoint uncertainty means dictators. Means countries where people have no rights, say so, or equality. So I think you could argue for years what should and what should not be cut. Today I was looking at my Sun Earth Day pics on facebook had and had a visual
of something else I was just studying. Superconductivity. Specifically (Phonons).

Keynesian Mulitiplier Theory

The Keneysian Multiplier was first developed by Richard F. Kahn in 1931 near the depression. Exogenous increases in spending by a multiple of that increase. Or saying a government could stimulate a great deal of new production with a modest outlaying. Only if the people who recieve this money then spend most on consumtion goods. Food clothes pictures etc.

I first of all agree with the basic principles behind Keynesian theory. But I think it could be modified to streamline money from the treasury. Maybe a clause that says it must be spent specifically on certain goods. If you tracked every stimulus check we would learn a lot must of been wasted.

The theory continues that the people who recieve this money then spend most on consumption goods and save the rest. The extra spending allows businesses to hire
more people and pay them . Which in turn allows a further increase in consumer spending at each step. At each step of the muliplier the increase in spending is smaller than in the first previous step. So that the multiplier process tapers off and allows the attainment of an equlibrium. Importing and tax payments are the variables in this equation.

I agree with this theory in many aspects because money without purpose is useless.
But my idea is that we could possibly make a stipulation that says a stimulus
check must be spent on 50% consumer goods and 50% capitol goods. The service sector employs 80% of Americans alone and includes all consumer products. Capitol goods are factory machinery, tools, equipment and other products which are used to produce other products for consumption. Used to produce other goods or services. They are key to developing a positive return from manufactors. Manufactoring companies use capitol goods to make funtional goods to sell individual services. As a result capitol goods are sometimes referred to as producers of goods or means of production.

Also this clause would say 50% must be spent on consumer goods. Food, clothing, whatever is consumed, by consumers. The theory is designed to bring equilibrium but if money is not spent in either of these areas what good is distributing large sums
of money. My theory is if we created a Voucher program or card for future stimulus that guaranteed each payment is spent on ONLY these areas we could see a difference.

Hello UNDP,

First of want to applaud Helen Clark, and the UN for continuing to be the torch bearers for progress! Without your work imagine where the world would be. No checks and balances or accountability leads to the past mistakes.

I am studying your work and responses to the question " how can we end poverty." The pattern among the answers is starting to reflect the same issues. Increase spending in education. Give people in the LDC's control of the industrys which supply the world, with resources. By this they need governments who spend money on industrialization and less on military. Need more leaders like the WEC Forum speakers who are sincere and want this done for their citizens but somtimes don't have the technolgy to make it happen. They sometimes reach a ceiling where they have no choice but to use foreign mechanisms to manufacture their resources because of years of colonialization. Years of unfair trade policys that have left them in a state of poverty.
The effects of which do not dissappear overnight. Even with dedicated countries help who understand poverty first hand, its still a lasting issue. Just because, South Africa is now a democracy does not mean the effects of colonialism dissapear. In places like India and Africa people speak of auditing and holding goverment officials responsible as well. Local leaders responsible. But this is a Worldwide issue as well. If you are not loyal to the constituency that pays your salary who are you loyal too. But not just politicians everyone should adopt this philosophy. No matter what walk of life. If I get capital from the public in any form. If I get funding from teens to support a exotic lifestyle I should be responsible for making sure teens are properly educated. If I accept money from senior citizens for medication, I should have a social responsiblity to do something for senior citizens. This should be a Bill American citizens should put before Congress. Also other countrys should consider
presenting to their governments. MDG' was the brainchild of neccessity and common sense. Why any nation in a global reccession thinks this is something to blow off as trvial is absurd. As the World cries become louder, the real trivial will begin to be noticeable. The distractions will become obvious. The only question will be the source and why. THE BEGINNING OF SPACE AGE EDUCATION!

This is a idea to build a National Website that combines elementary, highschool, and college curriculum into one super accelerated course that ends with a FOUR YEAR DEGREE!! This will be especially beneficial in places where getting to school is impossible or life threatening. We want to make sure all our kids get a education. Home schooling has proved to be percentage wise creating better students. We want to take this principle a step further with a college degree all a part of this internet based eduaction, since some have already started web based highschool diplomas. What will make are program different is we will focus are earlier level courses on the disired major. For example if a child wants a degree in Mechanical Engineering we will base the majority of there pre-studies in this area. A unique eduaction designed for each student.

Neighborhood stock tickers is another program that will focus on getting our kids in a financial mindstate. This program will place small tickers in places where kids congregate to remind them their is a better way to earn money. We want to remind kids their are options to a negative lifestyle. For those kidcorps who choose to invest in the Big Board this will be a way to stay abreast at all times of their finances . Our campain will focus on schools, colleges, and youth sporting events.

This is a concept which is aimed at fighting the Global Depression. We plan to recruit celebritys to participate in a WORLD WIDE telecast olympic fashion that creates franchises and purchases real estate kids own and work in. We hope to make this the HIGHEST RATED show in network history and attract every person with a television for this cause. We want to help stamp out poverty wherever it may exist. The annual J.D. Power and Associates North America Hotel Guest Satisfaction Index Study measured overall hotel guest satisfaction based on six measures: check-in/check-out, guest room, food and beverage, hotel services, hotel facilities, and costs and fees. Hotel chains were ranked in six segments: luxury, upscale, mid-scale full service, mid-scale limited service, economy/budget and extended stay.

Consumers appear to appreciate the value of new product and service offerings being introduced by many hotel chains, as increases in overall guest satisfaction are being driven by improvements in the measures of food and beverage, costs and fees (value of services) and hotel services.

In its latest triennial review of the list of Least Developed Countries (LDCs) in 2009, the Committee for Development Policy used the following three criteria for the identification of the UN LDCs:

A low-income criterion, based on a three-year average estimate of the gross national income (GNI) per capita (under $905 for inclusion, above $ 1,086for graduation);
A human capital status criterion, involving a composite Human Assets Index (HAI) based on indicators of: (a) nutrition: percentage of population undernourished; (b) health: mortality rate for children aged five years or under; (c) education: the gross secondary school enrolment ratio; and (d) adult literacy rate; and
An economic vulnerability criterion, involving a composite Economic Vulnerability Index (EVI) based on indicators of: (a) population size; (b) remoteness; (c) merchandise export concentration; (d) share of agriculture, forestry and fisheries in gross domestic product; (e) homelessness owing to natural disasters; (f) instability of agricultural production; and (g) instability of exports of goods and services.

Another major goal of this concept will be to reduce the spread of Malaria
and Cholera.

Malaria is widespread in tropical and subtropical regions, including parts of the Americas (22 countries), Asia, and Africa. Each year, there are approximately 350–500 million cases of malaria,[1] killing between one and three million people, the majority of whom are young children in sub-Saharan Africa.[2] Ninety percent of malaria-related deaths occur in sub-Saharan Africa. Malaria is commonly associated with poverty, and can indeed be a cause of poverty[3] and a major hindrance to economic development.

Cholera[1] is a severe infection caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae, which primarily affects the small intestine. The main symptoms include profuse watery diarrhea and vomiting. Transmission is primarily by the acquisition of the pathogen through contaminated drinking water or infected food. The severity of the diarrhea and associated vomiting can lead to rapid dehydration and electrolyte loss, which can lead to death. Cholera is a major cause of death in the world.
The study of cholera has been used as an example of early epidemiology. Study of the V. cholerae bacterium has also shed light on many of the mechanisms used by bacteria to infect and survive in their hosts.

"With all the costs involved in travel today, guests are looking for a more all-inclusive experience when they book a hotel reservation," said Hirneise. "While there is no replacement for good customer service, consumers want all the comforts of home when they stay at a hotel, and they don't want to be nickeled and dimed to get them."

The study also found that 41 percent of respondents booked a hotel reservation online-up from 36 percent in 2004. Hotel brand Web sites continue to earn increased market share of online bookings compared to independent travel Web sites. In most segments, reservations were booked directly through a hotel's site more than twice as often as independent sites. Online bookings were most common in the extended stay segment, where more than one-half (52%) of reservations were booked through the Internet.

The study was based on responses from more than 37,000 guests who stayed in a hotel between December 2004 and May 2005.

Just woke up today to read a BLOG by AngelRock and got a brainstorm. The cause Journey for Change is bringing kids to Africa to do service on that beautiful continent. While reading the artice somthing went off in my mind. Construction of the plant will begin as early as mid-2010, with Toshiba aiming to start production in the first half of next year, the Nikkei said.
In a brief statement, Toshiba said it was still considering how much to invest and when to start building the plant.
"We will carefully analyse the market conditions before reaching our decision," Toshiba said.
Toshiba's memory chip business, previously a drag on earnings, has staged a sharp recovery on surging global demand for flash memory chips often used for mobile gadgets and other high-tech digital products such as iPods.
As a result, the company has decided to partially resume plans, frozen due to the economic crisis, to build new factories, the Nikkei said.
The new plant is expected to almost double Toshiba's monthly NAND production capacity from about 260,000 wafers to about 500,000, making it the top maker of the chips, ahead of South Korea's Samsung Electronics, it said

As I thought today about all the things going on in the world something occurred
To me. One of the greatest men in History who is still living, message has fell on
Deaf Ears. No matter how many times he appears on television promoting goodwill
And Peace. Most people still don't even know why he got incarcerated I think the man has come to the conclusion there is something much deeper going on. He just hopes we catch on to it. He's not gonna keep putting himself in the line of fire to
rally people to action if they feel it's not important. Why would he. I think Melinda Gates is a lot more like Betty and Coretta than the average you know what. When I spoke to a young talented author today I knew she would support me but she's a diamond herself. A cousin of a queen with a conscious.

Nelson but what difference does it make if we take NO ACTION! How many pictures are we gonna watch of people wearing old clothes and living in shacks to say enough is enough. As I watched Mrs Keys in Africa these past few weeks As much

Purpose is a new skyscraper that employs people in it's creation and creates a place 4 business.Non-pupose is money spent on a Luxary car while you live in a project building. If 10,000 people in projects pooled their money what could happen.
If 10,000 people used a percentage of the luxury car payment on buying a corporation what harm could be done. Jobs for their kids. A office building for their kids to work in. Pupose is increasing the SPACE PROGRAMS BUDGET. But Ego is for the most part larger than purpose in most people. Cars employ people but we still have to keep them in context with the bigger picture. The automakers would be a lot stronger also if we had a stronger economy! That starts with innovation, education and job creation. The automakers as shown are not helped by defaulted autoloans. Its the same with the credit industry. The housing industry. We can't always want the front without anything behind it. The prop without the stand. Eventually the prop will have nothing to stand on. So my theory of using benefit concerts to buy office real estste and franchises for kids is a investment in the future. A investment that will pay off with a stronger dollar! The less jobs we create the weaker the dollar gets. The higher inflation gets. The lower are standard

Of values. When financial value trumps human values we live in a system without
Values. Values like compassion for the vulnerable. Charity and forgiveness. Peace over conflict. The currency of grace. Every human being has value and deserves respect. If just enough people are happy there is no need for change. She spoke of how 9 million children dying every single year before the age of five. Where is are integrity when we brake are promise to put 72 million children in primary school.
How human values should drive the redesign of our society. How important is it to invest in the undervalued because you recognize ther potential. Invest in the poor and uneducated. Restore human values, restore consciousness and we restore justice.
This way kids won't live with our mistakes or repitition. The global redesign initiative is so important. Solutions must include opinions from develoing countries, the private sector and NGO's. Even if you don't like what they say you must listen to give voice to the indigenous. Do we really represent others or do we just represent our own narrow interest. Now is the time to rebuild the system. Now is the time to confront the rising challenges of our age. NGO's and ground breaking entrepreneurs are coming up with ides but we have to support them. Economic prosperity is a means to a end and not a end in itself. Violence, poverty, persecution, and pain are indicators of our worlds conscious. The key indicator of human advancement is education. How many children are enrolled in school and the quality
of education says lot. Schools are incubators of the world we want to create. Micrcosms of our future. The classrooms will defeat poverty, and terroism. This is the place our student will learn the principles that will save our planet. Where they will learn to defend themselves against misguided beliefs and men. Only education can make Redesign a global initiative. We must rebuild and rethink the international system currently in place. Revalue human values. Restore them to public values.
